You can go your own way! Fortune favours the brave so be prepared to “fly” in the opposite direction to everyone else. In WW2 aircraft played a strategic role but there were shortages of metal, metal workers and manufacturing capacity that affected all combatants. The UK took a highly innovative and risky approach with the Mosquito. They made planes out of a raw material where material availability and manufacturing capacity were in surplus. Wood. There was a surplus of wood and in fact one could use idle carpenters and boat building capacity to build aircraft. On top of that they broke all the rules of the day by building a Bomber with no guns - unheard of at the time. It compensated by being the fastest plane in the sky thanks to its construction. It could be argued that no airplane amassed as remarkable a combat record in so short a time as did the Mosquito. It entered the war relatively late, a year to the day after the Battle of Britain ended, but it debuted with technology and aerodynamics far more advanced than the Spitfire’s. Certainly no airplane flew as many different kinds of missions and performed them as well as the Mosquito, one of the world’s first successful multirole combat aircraft.It seemed such a benighted concept at the time: a bomber with no guns. After all, this was the era of the Flying Fortress, of four-engine aluminum overcasts carrying tons of machine guns, ammunition, ammo cans and belts, complex turret units…and add in the weight of the gunners themselves, dressed in heavy heated gear, helmets and flak jackets, sucking oxygen from tanks that weighed substantial amounts. All this could add up to one-sixth of a heavy bomber’s empty weight—three extra tons, in the case of a B-17. Plus the drag of blisters and turrets, gun barrels poking into the slipstream and wide-open waist windows.The de Havilland Mosquito was the anti-Fortress, a bomber proposed to the Royal Air Force with speed as its salvation, not guns. And only a two man crew. Be contrarian. Nobody else is going that way.

With all due respect the author, who likely knows much more than I do on the topic, I think the conclusions in this piece, while they may have some positive effect in the VERY short term with respect to readiness, may have long term negative effects on our strategic readiness for the 'revolution in military affairs' presented by the advent of swarms of small uncrewed platforms.Just as no amount of battleship 'readiness' could have been helpful to the Yamato as it battled planes from the USS Hornet or the Bizmark as it battled planes from the HMS Victorious, no amount of 'readiness' will be helpful for existing surface Navy assets without materially augmented capability and adapted deployment strategy.As I read this piece, I immediately felt like it could have been written by a battleship enthusiast in the 1930s. I've taken the liberty to pasting the conclusions below as if it were written at that time. "The battle against [carrier based planes] can be where you least expect it, so be prepared accordingly, even if in protected waters.- Deploy [more catapult craft and RADAR] to better view the battlespace. Aviation assets of all types, including [balloons], extend a ship’s range of action and can buy time to better defend against [carrier based plane] attacks.- Readiness matters.Ivanovetswas an older ship, and sporadic fire from her 30mm close-in weapon system suggested these systems were not fully functional or ready for combat. Maximum readiness of all ship systems is essential to evade and defend against [carrier based planes.]- Additional crew-served weapons can help. A burst of .50 caliber machine gun fire won’t deter a [carrier based plane] the way it might deter a manned speedboat attack, but all the additional firepower a ship can muster could be the difference between a successful defense and sinking. Many installed weapon systems have a minimum range and if [carrier based planes] penetrate inside that there are few other options for self-defense.- Vigilance is essential. Deploy additional lookouts, close up additional watch stations and keep people ready. Every additional set of eyes on the situation could make a difference in detecting a [carrier based plane] before it gets too close, as appears to have been the case with theIvanovets."In the 1930s we hedged our bets by investing in aircraft carriers.
