Should God bless America?
The Towers have fallen and smoke settles over ground zero. A wave of fiery patriotism suddenly sweeps across our land. All of a sudden it’s now okay to mention God in public. Churches fill to capacity, billboards demand that "God Bless America," and the Madison, Wisconsin School Board "allows" our Creator’s name to be part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Armies mobilize, remembrances of WWII and Kate Smith’s rendition of God Bless America resound through Congress and echo within sports stadiums. People’s initial fear quickly gives way to a flood tide of national pride, and Americans become intent; not on humility and repentance - but on remembrance and revenge!
As America did during the Gulf War, we again turn to God for help. But how sincere are we? Has our country become spiritual, as our founding fathers intended, or do we merely intend to use God to lean on in a time of crisis and then toss Him away when things get better? Should God bless America? After a period of rebellion, God judged Sodom and every other culture that turned its back on Him. If God wouldn’t spare these nations, why should He spare America?
After all, we are a country that leads the world in premarital sex, divorce, pornography, and murder. Where one out of every three children born is the child of an unwed mother. Where 4 out of 10 children go to bed without a father in the home. And where more than 15.4 million citizens are addicted to gambling. We have chosen to abort 45 million unborn and partially born babies and are told to tolerate what God says is an abomination. The traditional family has become an "endangered species." We elected a President that was an admitted liar and adulterer, and have ordered God out of our schools, our government, and our lives.
According to the Barna Research Group, fewer than 10% of American Christians actually possess a Biblical worldview. We have become literally a spiritual wasteland of beliefs and philosophies. Eighty-two percent of Americans who describe themselves as Christians say they pray, but are unclear as to which god they pray to. (Secular Humanism) "My god approves of this, while another’s god does not." Sixty percent do not believe in the accuracy of the Bible and half of that figure will rarely read it; only ¼ believe that Satan is real, and shockingly, only 40% are convinced that Jesus lived a sinless life! In 1962, 84% of our nation believed in the existence of absolute truth, now more than 75% do not believe absolute truth exists. Ninety-three percent of adults say, "they and nobody else should determine what is, and what isn’t, moral in their lives."
And what about our youth? Nationally known Christian author Josh McDowell states that within two years of finishing high school only 10% of young Americans will attend church. Sociologist Albert Seigel wrote, "Twenty years is all we have to accomplish the task of civilizing the infants who are born into our midst each year. These people know nothing of our language, our culture, our religion, our values or customs." Simply put: Every society is only one generation away from - barbarism!
If you’re a Christian, you know that God has delivered a message to America. God isn’t taken by surprise. Nothing on the face of the earth takes place without His knowledge of it, His permission for it, and, at times, His doing behind it. If the Bible teaches anything, it teaches that God is sovereign in the affairs of men. Since the destruction of the Canaanite empire, every nation throughout history that has repudiated the moral laws of God has fallen victim to the wrath of God. There have been no exceptions.
Although America has been a blessed nation, Scripture clearly stated that God will not hear the prayers of an unrepentant people. "Therefore do not pray for this people . . . for I will not hear you." (Jeremiah 7:16.) Nowhere in Scripture does God state He will forgive without repentance. Second Chronicles 7:14 states that only through humility, prayer, and repentance, will God heal our land. America has sinned. The murder of 45 million innocent children is proof enough. The overriding question for believers now concerns how a holy and a just God can continue to bless and preserve a nation in which murder is its centerpiece, self-indulgence its priority, immorality its pastime, and repentance an afterthought. Whom He loves, He disciplines. We demand that God bless America, but we give Him little reason to do so!
